Daytona Sidewalks

Just the normal 10 mile run.  I felt pretty good.  Nothing worth mentioning.  I was still a little upset over backing off and not running too fast this weekend until I saw the prerace article with a picture of me in last years race http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070217/SPORTS/702170462 and then compared it to the post race article with a picture of me at the end of this years race http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070218/SS07/702180408 .  Clearly for this years race i was a little more comfortable.  I'm guessing the difference came in the first mile where we went out 20 seconds faster last year than this year.  I remember really digging into the well early last year and this year I didn't at all so that's kind of nice.  Maybe I'm just lazy.

How was your training oriented versus last year? I suspect you had more speed work with shorter and faster intervals. Where as with this year your training is really more tilted on the aerobic side. I notice in years where I had less volume training and more high intensity stuff I could really hammer it in the first mile but pay for it later. As for now with more mileage and less frequency of high intensity work I just naturally start up slow but by 1k I would slowly start to reel guys in. And I did not feel hammered by last weeks 5k at all. So no I dont think anybody who trains like you is lazy at all. I just think a little more vo2 max work and some fast 800s would really get the rpms up at the start. Dont mean to throw all that on you its just that Ive experienced this same thing. I would do more also but I am focused on getting comfortable with high mileage first.

Hey Steve, Thanks for the thoughts, i agree 100%. But my training in the last 3 years since arriving in Daytona is pretty much the exact same. Mostly fartleks with the occassional track workout and a lot of racing my way into shape. The big difference from last year to this year in this past race was that last year a couple of kenyans took the race out that hard. This year with me setting the pace I ran a pace I was comfortable with. I'd like to have made it a fast day but it's not easy to do by yourself. I was hoping for a good test to see where i'm at fitnesswise but didn't get it. But your suggestions are what I actually try for with the fartleks being vo2 oriented and the track stuff being fast.

By the way great run at that 5k! Id give anything just to string together 3 5min miles!
